any book is good. the best thing you can do when training is to be consistent. petsmart also offers training classes that are affordable and the trainer trains you and your dog. what i mean is he or she teachs you how to train your dog.

If you can get a book by Cesar Millan . He is a dog behaviuors who trains the owner to understand the needs of the dog so that they grow up to be well balanced pack member. He also does a tv programme which is worth watching.

As patronising as it sounds the "For Dummies" books are brilliant, I think there's a "Puppies for dummies", there's also a "Dogs for Dummies" and also a "Dog Tricks for Dummies".

Ian Dunbar's books "Before you get your puppy" and "After you get your puppy" are available as free PDFs online, and are amazing. *searches for links*

If you're interested in clicker training the "Click For Joy" by Melissa Alexander gives a good basic grounding in how the clicker works and how to use it to build basic behaviours.

I'd reccomend going into a book shop and picking up the books and leafing through them. Find one that uses positive reinforcement (treats and praise) and not one that preaches "dominance theory" (if you want to know why then I'd suggest you pick up "The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson. In fact, I'm just going to reccomend TCC anyway, it's a brilliant book that explains dog behaviour in a way that everyone, from first time owners to dog trainers, can understand). Praise works better than punishment!

Specifically avoid the Monks of New Skete(paraprashed quote from their book: "If your dog isn't yelping you're not hitting him hard enough", need I say more?) and Cesar Milan, the man doesn't know anything (again, TCC for more info).

Sorry for the uber long reply, I love dog-training books!
