Is it possible to train my dog to stop marking?

Dog training books

I’m at the end of my rope with my dog right now. He just will not stop marking his territory in the house!

We used to live in a high rise apartment with unreliable elevators so he had been litter trained (though he did have the occasional accident). About 6 months ago we moved into a house with a yard and immediately began training him to do his business outside.

We were very diligent with him, made sure he was always supervised, and within about a month he knew to stand at the door when he had to go.

However, we’ve had SERIOUS problems with him marking everywhere in our house! It started when we moved to the new house, but at first we chalked it up to him being in a new place with a lot of new furniture. We figured that with training he would stop after awhile but he really hasn’t. He’s still supervised a good chunk of the time (we don’t let him have full run of the house, we use gates to keep him either in a specific room with us or on a specific floor), and any messes he makes are immediately and thouroughly cleaned with Nature’s Miracle.

I’ve caught him in the act multiple times, and when I do I’ll shout "NO" at him and try to make noise like banging on a table to distract him. Most of the time he just carries on with what he’s doing then walks away sheepishly.

We got him a belly band, but he hates it. He still wears it a lot, but he spends all of his time in it either wriggling around on the floor trying to get it off or licking it until it’s completely soaked and we need to take it off and wash it. He does tend try to mark less while wearing it but I’m not sure if it’s just because he’s so distracted!

We seemed to be making progress, he’d been wearing the band and we’d been supervising him for weeks without him trying to mark more than once or twice, so we tried him for awhile without the belly band. He was really good for about a week, really not making attempts to mark and I thought I’d broken him of the habit but suddenly he’s marking all over the place again, worse than he was before, this has been going on for almost a month now!

Nothing has changed in our house, his routine hasn’t been disturbed, I can’t see any reason for him to be stressed. So I really don’t know what to do with him (before you ask, no, I won’t get rid of him if he doesn’t stop marking – I’d just like to make my life with him a bit more pleasant!).

He is a 4 year old pug/boston terrier mix. He is neutered (we had it done when he was about 7 mos old), up to date on shots, and received a clean bill of health from the vet no more than a month ago. He is crate trained and never messes his crate even if he ends up in there longer than usual.

Is it even possible to ever break him of this habit (I’ve read some books that say it’s not)? I feel like I’ve tried everything. And I don’t want him to be forced to wear the belly band all the time. What should I do?

My dog always has poop-related problems?

Dog training books

I rescued my dog from the streets about a year and a half ago. I think she’s a Havanese, or some kind of mix. She was hit by a car long before I found her.

Ever since I’ve had, she’d had problems with her poop. The first time I took her to the vet for blood in her stool, the vet told me she was on her period. I had to go back a second time with a lovely sample!

Since then, she’s had seriously bloody stool twice more. I was told it was a bacterial infection all 3 times and was fine after some antibiotics.

She doesn’t have parvo or corona, and was checked for parasites. She also never has a solid poop. It’s not usually diarrhea, but sometimes it is. Other times it comes out like mucus. There are also times when her poop and her butt have a terrible almost a bit of a metallic smell. But she’s never lethargic and always has a healthy appetite.

I’m not sure about the quality of the food I’m feeding her. My other dog is fine on the same diet. I went a couple of month making homemade food with a recipe I found in a training book (rice, boiled chicken, vegetables, a bit of oil). It didn’t make a difference though!

I live in Korea where going to a vet is really cheap, but communication is really really difficult. I was hoping someone could give me advice about what to ask my vet to look for? It’s kind of difficult giving him the long complicated list of symptoms.

I appreciate any help you can give me!
Thanks!

How can I train my dog to go jogging with me?

Dog training books

I have a medium sized dog, about the size of a collie, but he is very muscular. (He can drag my other dog who is 20 lbs larger than he across the floor while playing.) He just turned 1 a month ago and the book I used for training him said not to start running until the dog is in good health and a year old.

How can I start going jogging with my dog and what is a distance he can handle? Should I start out just going around the block? I don’t want to over estimate his endurance, but he is a very muscular athletic dog. (He’s already a great swimmer.)
Oh and he is a mutt. Just to clear that up.
I already walk him a mile daily.

What are tricks you have trained your dog?

Dog training books

I’m getting a puppy and am trying to think of tricks I can train her as she becomes more advanced. Of course I’m going to do sit, lay, stay, come and heel. I’ve taught dogs in the past to shake and hold a treat on their nose before tossing it up in the air to catch it. Oh, and I plan on teaching her to roll over and hopefully sit pretty. I’m not going to push her, so don’t worry about that, but are there any other tricks I can try and how did you train your dog to do so? And if there’s anyone that’s taught their dogs how to do even more advanced things (advanced frisbee, obstacle course, etc.) I’d love advice about that! I’ve read books and watched shows (and done more simple things with obstacles and such in the past) but any other advice/ tips are appreciated. I love training my siblings dogs and am very good at it.

Dog training books

I have a friend who’s been a dog trainer for 10 years. She’s always been associated with reputable dog training schools and she’s even a published author on training dogs. I’ve always looked up to this woman and often envied all her knowledge ………….till last night.

Among the few dogs she owns she has a young female German Sheppard. She got her from a well known Canadian champion breeder. So far so good. Now about last night…..I was browsing on Facebook when I saw her ad, she’s looking for a male stud to mate with her dog!!!, she wants her to have 1 litter before spaying her!!! and her only requirement is that the Male German Sheppard be a ‘handsome’ specimen!!!!

…this woman dedicated the first chapter of her book on puppy mills and backyard breeders!!!!

In 1 second I lost all respect for her………am I overreacting?

Uncontrolable Dog Food Aggression…Emergency Help!!!?

Dog training books

I have 2 Pemboke Welsh Corgi males and 1 female and non are spayed or neutered and they are all between 1-1.5 years old. I am having major problems with the males but not the female. Around food or treats or any residue food smells they attack each other in a lock and hold position. I have had to take one to the emergency for stitches because of the attack. They are great companion and play with each other as long as food isnt around. They attacl/aggression is only towards food and not toys or humans nor has it ever been demosntrated towards humans. I can anyone else can stick their hands in their food bowl, feed them with their hands, play with them while they eat and they will not attack not show any signs of aggression or discomfort. the younger male after he finishes eating will pee on his empty food bowl, this is something that he has been doing from a very young age. they are all potty trained and do not have accidentss. It is only the younger one who will pee on residue smells, toys, dog beds, and empty food bowls, but this does not trigger any aggression. The dogs eat at the same time, once a day, but it completely different sections of the house, one inside and one outside. I do not know what to do because I am a college student and I do not have much funds. They are all up to date with vaccinations, are at the right weight, and are healthy. To continue, I know spaying/neutering is an option, but this does not mean it will automatically stop the problem. From experience I have non of many family dogs with aggressive behavior that was not controlled or minimized from being neutered. So please give me different advice towards what to do other than spaying and neutering my dogs. Books, websites, articles, or just plan advice will greatly be appreciated. Thank you for your time and have a great day!!!

Does anyone ever got problems getting stuffs for your dog? Especially caused by parents?

Dog training books

I came from a family that don’t really like animals. All they want is a dog to guard the house. I’m the only animal lover in the family. I care for the pets. Now we got a dog. I did most of the work like feeding, playing, bathing, going out for a walk and choosing equipments. I even got a book as a guide training my dog. The problem is; my parents always have the reluctance to buy stuffs for my dog like a squeaky ball for playing fetch for my dog or a new collar :(

Dog training books

I have a rescued Pitbull mix named Ozzy. Whenever we rescued him the shelter told us he was not abused….lie. He was afraid of EVERYTHING. Whenever we got him he would hid under a table and just shake, the adoption was very stressful for him.
Well to get to the point we have had him for about 3 years now and he has settled in and can be aggressive when he sees someone outside our fence of if someone knocks on the door. But that’s not really the problem, the problem is he has turned some of that aggression on to my little brother who is only 10.
This just started about a month ago, the first two times Ozzy was laying on my parents bed(he sleeps there too) and my mom was sitting on it too reading a book and my little brother walked in and the first time he put his arms around Ozzy and startled him so he bit him once and the second time he just leaned over Ozzy and he nipped at him once.
Well we all believed it was just Ozzy being territorial and so we just shrugged it off.
Well two days ago my little brother and Ozzy were in the living room and my brother accidentally stepped on his paw. My dog then yelped and proceeded to attack him. Everyone but my dad(who was sleeping because he works nights) was gone. But my brothers scream woke up my dad and the site of our dog attacking my brother scared my dad so bad that he said that if he had a gun he would have shot my dog! My brothers arm was bleeding a little bit and you could tell that Ozzy had bit from above my brothers wrist to just below his shoulder.

After that happened my parents had a talk and said that we were getting rid of him. I love my dog so much and I started to cry and so did my brother because he thought it was his fault. They decided to give him one more chance and making sure that my brother is not alone with him anymore but if it happens again they are putting him down. I don’t know what to do!
We believe Ozzy is only biting my brother because he sees him lower in the "pack" than he is. I told my parents that it isn’t Ozzy’s fault that it is ours because he is not an aggressive dog so we never tried to really train him and the fact that he was abused and is a pitbull mix definitely doesn’t help.
Please if anything happens again they are going to put him down! He is my best friend I would be completely changed for life if this happens to him!!
I’m not asking, I am begging for any advice you can give me and also I would like to have estimations on how much a personal trainer or a dog training class would cost. If it helps any I live in Southeast Missouri and there is a Petco here.
The shelter told us Ozzy was 1-2 years old when we adopted him, once again we think it was a lie because his head and chin is starting to go gray, so he isn’t a puppy. We think he is about 6 or 7 years old.

PLEASE HELP OZZY! Here are two pictures of him so you can see what type of dog he is and just in case it might help any.

What breed should i get?

Dog training books

Hello,
I was wondering what breed of dog i should get!
A little about me-
Hi, I live on a 200 acre farm in the wilderness with my mom (i am still a teen)! We live in a very rural area in the foothills of southern indiana with no neighbors or roads. I have 3 dogs, 2 italian greyhounds and a young Golden Retriever mix. I do not have any livestock but i have lots of chickens and 6 free ducks ( the chickens are in a pen 24/7).
I really want a dog that is willing to do just about anything not just because i have a treat in my hand but because they have a need and a will to please! I want a very smart dog that will be very eager to learn! Also my mom works at home so somebody will be there most of the time! I would love to be involved in agility and disk competitions! I will be able to give this dog a lot of exercise when i am home from school ( did i mention that i have 3 lakes that that dog can swim in)! Also this dog will be outside playing with my other dogs most of the day but will be let inside several times a day and will be let inside at night to keep them away from the wolves and cougars. Also this dog will be put inside while we are away from the house but when we are present which is most of the time we let our dogs roam free but we always be sure to supervise new dogs that we add to our pack to make sure that they stay around. I will be willing to give this dog as much grooming as is required. I will definitely take this dog to puppy and dog obedience classes and to the vet. To prove that i understand the health importance of a dog i feed all of my dogs Origen dog food ( best dog food on the market) and also Nature’s Variety raw medallions. Also a little extra info is that i would like to get a Border Collie (I don’t really like Australian Shepherds) but i don’t know if they would fit into my lifestyle although to me my situation looks pretty good for one. Also i have over 50 dog training and info books! Also if i got a Border Collie i would take it herding about once a week! But like i said i have 3 other dogs that are very hyper breeds so that may help tire him out! I will take this dog on walks and hikes around my property. I need to get a dog that is social with both other animals and people and a dog that gets along with cats and fowl such as ducks. If you are thinking that a border collie wouldn’t be friendly to cats then i will be sure to socialize him properly around my cats and my ducks and chickens when he is a puppy. Thank you and please recommend different dog breeds that would fit me and also what you think about me owning a border collie because that is my ideal dog breed!
