Are there some ignorant people that you wish would make an account and spend ONE day here in the Dog Section?

Dog training books

I wish my parents, BOTH of them, would make a Yahoo! Account, and spend just ONE day surfing this section.

My dad’s dogs are not trained. They think that it is fine to feed a dog any old food, even chicken bones. They figure since wild dogs eat chicken, how can it hurt? I told them it’s because they eat them RAW, not COOKED. They think dogs do not need health care.

My dad’s idea of ‘training’ his new lab mix is by hitting her, and forcing her into a behavior. For housebreaking (well I shouldn’t call it housebreaking, because the dogs stay outside), he will not hesitate to rub a dog’s nose in their droppings. He also thinks the best way to train a dog not to jump up is to push them away and yell at them.

Do you know anyone who frustrates you so much when it comes to dogs that you wish you could just shove a dog book down their throat? Feel free to vent here.

Also, I’m trying to train out the bad training my dad has ignorantly been putting in. Is this possible, or will it confuse?

Every single one of my grooming clients, for starters.

I can’t tell you how many horribly allergy-ridden dogs I see, and when asked about their diet? "Purina". And generally they refuse to consider the fact that food might be causing their dogs problems.

I also have one client with a mixed breed "designer" mutt who is 2 years old and still not spayed. I asked her if she was planning to get it done, and she said "No, we want to breed her. She’s such a sweet dog, we want a puppy just like her. And it’ll be good for the kids (ages 5 and 7) to see the birth." I banged my head into a wall for hours on that one.

Another client brought me a Cairn terrier (male, 1 year) who "might be a little fiesty". I kid you not, 5 seconds on the table, the dog ripped the back of my hand off. He was the WORST dog I ever met, and I sent him straight home. When his owner got there and started trying to get the collar and leash on, he attacked her!!! And she just stood their wagging her finger at him and softly saying "No! Be good!" After she finally got him leashed, I suggest neutering might calm him down. Once again: "Oh, but I wanted to breed him." Lady, you can’t even CONTROL him!!! Ugh.

I once groomed a poodle that was 2 years old and had NEVER been groomed. He was one solid 2-inch thick mat of hair, head to toe. The insides of his ears were matted to his neck, his toes were matted together, his legs were matted to his body… it was disgusting. There were a few stray hairs on top of his back, over top of the mats, that the owner had apparently been trying to brush out. She actually asked me if we could leave him as long as he was because he was "so soft and fluffy"!!!! Um, no lady, he’s going to be balder than a Chinese Crested in a few minutes.

I could go on forever, but yes, there are many many people who need a serious education.

i’m sorry your dad is like that
trying to train a dog again will be really really hard but it can be done
it will confuse him for a while but you just have to keep your patience
good luck! let me know how it goes!

My aunt. She really, honestly thinks that taking dogs to the vets or the groomers is a "stupid" idea because dogs are, supposedly, healthier than people. She also won’t buy the dog food because it eats whatever she cooks for her family. She doesn’t believe anything that comes out of my mouth, so all I can do is sit back and watch the train wreck.

Wish my parents would make a Y!A account, not because they’re ignorant, but because they’re tough teachers. I’m sure they’ll be able to knock some sense in some of the people who come on here asking ridiculous questions.

As for you trying to train the dog, if the dog is still living with your dad, any training you try to teach will be worthless; it’ll just go back to your dad’s house and continue its bad behavior since your dad isn’t following up with the training.

    YES YES YES!!!

I would LOVE if my dad, mom, and brother would spend ONE day on here!!! then I think they might have more respect for the dogs!!! buttt…My mom lets my buy the healthy dog food sometimes =] my dad doesnt care if the dogs go into the basement on hot days to cool of…and my brother….uhhh…

They arent ignorant but they arent the biggest dog lovers…My mom has a Y!A account but she doesnt go onto it very often…

to answer your Question…It will only work if your dad does it to…So until that happends…Give it lots of love!

As odd as this sounds, if that were my father – I would report him to ASPCA anonymously. If it bothers you that much you would protect the animals even if it meant you wouldn’t see them again but they might be rehabilitated and given to a good home, you know? I hope that you find a solution. I hope they dogs find a loving owner and your father learns to listen to you and understand animals. Take Care.
