How do you become a responsible and respectable dog breeder?

Dog training books

Im going to become a trainer for assistance dogs for the handicapped. I’m still doing research on four different breeds. I’m going to choose just one. But I want to make sure I breed them right. Is there any books or websights that are helpful? And what is a good way to make sure the puppies not trained to be assistance dogs get good homes? Should I have them do research on the breed before deciding they are able to buy one? Should I check out where the puppy will live?
What is propar vet care for new born puppies? How do I find good parent dogs?

Tips and/or recommended readings (websites/books/etc) on training our new 8 week old puppy?

July 30th, 2010

Dog training books

We just got a 8 week old puppy from a lady who was giving away her litter. The puppy is a mix of English Pointer (on one side) and the other being a Boxer/Chow mix. None of us have ever raised a dog before (its me, my dad, and my sister) and we were looking for any tips, suggestions, and recommended readings (websites, books, etc) that any of you guys might be able to provide.

Also, I hear its a good idea to go to a basic obedience trainer around 4-5 months old. Does anyone who live in the Metro Detroit, MI area have any suggestions on a good one?

Thank you.

what dog is right for me?

Dog training books

Hello,
I was wondering what breed of dog i should get!
A little about me-
Hi, I live on a 200 acre farm in the wilderness with my mom (i am still a teen)! We live in a very rural area in the foothills of southern indiana with no neighbors or roads. I have 3 dogs, 2 italian greyhounds and a young Golden Retriever mix. I do not have any livestock but i have lots of chickens and 6 free ducks ( the chickens are in a pen 24/7).
I really want a dog that is willing to do just about anything not just because i have a treat in my hand but because they have a need and a will to please! I want a very smart dog that will be very eager to learn! Also my mom works at home so somebody will be there most of the time! I would love to be involved in agility and disk competitions! I will be able to give this dog a lot of exercise when i am home from school ( did i mention that i have 3 lakes that that dog can swim in)! Also this dog will be outside playing with my other dogs most of the day but will be let inside several times a day and will be let inside at night to keep them away from the wolves and cougars. Also this dog will be put inside while we are away from the house but when we are present which is most of the time we let our dogs roam free but we always be sure to supervise new dogs that we add to our pack to make sure that they stay around. I will be willing to give this dog as much grooming as is required. I will definitely take this dog to puppy and dog obedience classes and to the vet. To prove that i understand the health importance of a dog i feed all of my dogs Origen dog food ( best dog food on the market) and also Nature’s Variety raw medallions. Also a little extra info is that i would like to get a Border Collie (I don’t really like Australian Shepherds) but i don’t know if they would fit into my lifestyle although to me my situation looks pretty good for one. Also i have over 50 dog training and info books! Also if i got a Border Collie i would take it herding about once a week! But like i said i have 3 other dogs that are very hyper breeds so that may help tire him out! I will take this dog on walks and hikes around my property. I need to get a dog that is social with both other animals and people and a dog that gets along with cats and fowl such as ducks. If you are thinking that a border collie wouldn’t be friendly to cats then i will be sure to socialize him properly around my cats and my ducks and chickens when he is a puppy. Thank you and please recommend different dog breeds that would fit me and also what you think about me owning a border collie because that is my ideal dog breed!

Celebrity Dog Trainers?

Dog training books

I know a lot of people here either swear by Ceaser Milian’s training methods, while other despise his views on training. I’m not a personal fan, but truthfully haven’t watch very many episodes of his show. The TV trainer I watch, and adore, is "It’s me or the dog’s" trainer, Victoria Stillwell. I have never had an issue with any method employed on her show, and often the advice I give on Y!A comes from something I’ve seen work on her show. Only owning two dogs, I obviously haven’t seen every problem out there, but her firm yet positive-training techniques always make sense to me, unlike Milian’s domenience based techniques, and of course on the show, they always appear to be effective. ;) Does anyone else have any views on her techniques? Would you recommend her books or show to new dog owners to gain tips on training? Whose philosophy of dog training do you find more effective, Stillwell’s or Milians? And other general impressions…
I think she should get more air time on ‘Greatest American Dog,’ some of those nitwits need her to give them a goo talking-to…

Are there some ignorant people that you wish would make an account and spend ONE day here in the Dog Section?

July 29th, 2010

Dog training books

I wish my parents, BOTH of them, would make a Yahoo! Account, and spend just ONE day surfing this section.

My dad’s dogs are not trained. They think that it is fine to feed a dog any old food, even chicken bones. They figure since wild dogs eat chicken, how can it hurt? I told them it’s because they eat them RAW, not COOKED. They think dogs do not need health care.

My dad’s idea of ‘training’ his new lab mix is by hitting her, and forcing her into a behavior. For housebreaking (well I shouldn’t call it housebreaking, because the dogs stay outside), he will not hesitate to rub a dog’s nose in their droppings. He also thinks the best way to train a dog not to jump up is to push them away and yell at them.

Do you know anyone who frustrates you so much when it comes to dogs that you wish you could just shove a dog book down their throat? Feel free to vent here.

Also, I’m trying to train out the bad training my dad has ignorantly been putting in. Is this possible, or will it confuse?

Ok I’m a Full Time Dog Trainer for PetSmart. I have a few things I’m wondering what I can write off.
1) my adopted dog who came from a shelter
0 donation to the shelter
2)Besides the 0 to adopt her. I donate money from my paycheck every week.
I heard you have to donate X amount of income before you can write it off. Whats the X amount?
3) Her supplies for upkeep.
Health, Grooming, food etc I’ve kept all receipts
4)I’ve bought many books, magazines and newsletters about dogs and dog training.

So i was wondering which things i could write and what i can.
I got her for training reasons, demo dog if you want to call her that. The books are to continue my education on dog training and dog information

Do any of these household cleaners hurt or irritate dogs?

July 28th, 2010

Dog training books

I got a Pomeranian puppy recently, and now I’m worried if any of the products I normally use could hurt her if she licked/chewed something I cleaned or if it might irritate her skin. I put her in another room when I’m cleaning and don’t let her back in until everything has dried. My dog training book mentioned avoid products with harsh chemicals but didn’t give any examples. Here’s the items I most commonly use:

- Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner
- Windex
- Fabuloso
- Pledge Natural Beauty
- Tide
- Snuggle
- Bissell Carpet Foam Cleaner
I’ve tried looking at the labels on products and I never see any that say they’re safe around pets. I haven’t been able to find any "green" cleaners around here. The only warnings bottles seem to have is for ingesting it (like drinking cleaner out of a bottle) or spraying in your eyes or skin when its wet. That doesn’t really say if it’s ok when it’s dry. I’ve even tried looking at their websites and they don’t say anything.
